A House: A Masterpiece of Modern Architecture

Chang Kyu Lee's Innovative Design Merges Privacy and Interaction

Chang Kyu Lee's 'A House' is a unique architectural feat that combines modern design with functionality. This single-family residential home, located in Yong-In, South Korea, is a testament to the innovative use of space and light, offering a private yet interactive environment for its inhabitants.

The design of 'A House' was inspired by its surroundings. The adjacency of neighboring houses and the south-facing orientation led to a unique development of openings and massing. The simple volume layout not only maximizes the surface area in contact with the natural environment, but also reflects and communicates with the surrounding context and site regulations. This design approach maintains a degree of privacy while offering a different architectural language.

What sets 'A House' apart is its celebration of interaction between families and neighbors while maintaining a strong sense of privacy. The design achieves this balance through the strategic use of openings and spaces. The A-shaped natural light, which starts from a single point at the top and spreads out through two bottom openings under the A-shaped roof, redefines the continuous spaces within the house.

The house is a steel-reinforced concrete structure with an exterior laminated with white stucco on the wall and a zinc roof. The interior walls are finished with vinyl paint on two gypsum boards, while the floors are set up with laminated marble. A full south-facing curtain wall window allows daylight in while maintaining privacy. The house also incorporates sustainable features such as a passive house super insulation wall, an energy-efficient condensing boiler system for radiant heating, and a natural ventilation system.

The house was designed to comply with local urban regulations and the client's request for a typical 'gable' roof shape. The design also ensures that all rooms meet the maximum light exposure oriented to the South. Despite having three separate floors, the design maintains connectivity between family members in terms of visual, sound, and light.

'A House' is a testament to Chang Kyu Lee's innovative architectural design. The house was awarded Silver in A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2017, a testament to its outstanding design and innovation. The design of 'A House' is not just a reflection of modern architecture but also a celebration of interaction and privacy, making it a true masterpiece.
